FAQs: Preserving Old Home Movies & Video Tapes

  • Why should I preserve my old home movies and video tapes?

Video tapes (like VHS, Hi8, Betamax, MiniDV, etc.) and film reels were never designed to last forever. Over time, they can fade, break down, or become unplayable as technology changes. Preserving them ensures your family’s memories aren’t lost forever.

  • Do tapes really deteriorate?

Yes. Magnetic tapes degrade with age—colors fade, sound distorts, and the tape itself can become brittle. Even if the tape is still good, VCRs and camcorders are harder to find and repair every year.

  • What are the benefits of converting my tapes to digital?

Protection from loss: Digital copies won’t degrade like physical tapes.Easier sharing: Send clips to friends and family instantly by text, email, or social media. Convenience: No bulky VCR or projector needed—just a phone, computer, or TV. Editing & organizing: Cut, combine, or label your footage for easier viewing. Peace of mind: Once preserved, you’ll always have a backup of your priceless memories.

  • How can I watch my old home movies once they’re digital?

Play digitized home videos on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Share the digital files with family members around the world. Store securely in the cloud for access anytime, anywhere. Create custom slideshows, highlight reels, or even DVDs for special occasions.

  • What if I don’t convert my tapes?

Unfortunately, once a tape is damaged or unplayable, the footage is often impossible to recover. Converting now is the best way to make sure your family’s history is safe for future generations.

  • How long does a VHS tape last?

Under ideal conditions, a VHS tape may last 10–30 years before noticeable decline, but many factors (like storage temperature, humidity, and how often they were played) can shorten their lifespan. Since most VHS tapes are already decades old, many are at or beyond their expected limits today.

  • Do you accept Betamax or S-VHS tapes?

Yes! We accept both Betamax and S-VHS tapes for transfer to digital or DVD. These formats require additional handling and are subject to a $10 per tape surcharge. Bring them in and our team will assess the condition and walk you through your options.

  • How long does video tape transfer take?

Turnaround time varies depending on the number of tapes and current order volume. In general, most orders are completed within 1–2 weeks. Each tape is captured in real time from start to finish, so a 2-hour tape takes 2 hours to transfer — plus review and processing time. We recommend calling ahead or asking at drop-off for a current estimate.

  • Can you transfer tapes that are damaged or moldy?

It depends on the extent of the damage. Tapes with minor wear, occasional dropout, or light deterioration can often still be transferred successfully. However, tapes that are moldy, have suffered water damage, or are physically broken may require special handling or may not be recoverable. We recommend bringing them in for an assessment — the sooner the better, as tape condition can continue to deteriorate over time. Do not attempt to play a damaged or moldy tape before bringing it in, as this can cause further damage.
